The Sunrise...

Teluk Cempedak in Kuantan is the  beach where I felt in love with the sea. On one excursion trip with my Boy Scout friends seeking adventure on one weekend during our teens, we decided to venture to a new beach that not many have been to  It was in the mid fifties when the beach that folks goes were the Teluk Sisek beach and Tanjong Api. Teluk Cempedak was still separated by hills and jungle, thus not seen. We decided to go on an adventure trip to see what beyond the jungle. We track following a narrow path where monkeys and large lizard still roams freely. We track on upward and after a while got to the top of the hill. As we decends we heard the roars of waves but still could not sea the sea. It was midday and the weather was hot and humid. We hike on sweating and eventually reached the end of the trail and saw the sea for the first time. It was still pristine.  We decided to take a rest under a huge Ketapang tree and after a while walk to the beach and play with the waves. It was a majestic sight to see and enjoy the freshness of the atmosphere. The beach sands was clean and golden in color. We were glad that we found this enclave of beach that folks call Teluk Cempedak. The beach flanks by fresh water streams soon became our favourite camping area on weekend. It was at this beach that one morning when camping there we woke up to see the glorious sun making it appearance with all it's glory.  An amber red ball slowly emerged from the horizon, glowing making it presence in the early morning. God's paintings presence above the horizon every morning for the enjoyment of everyone who visited the beach at that early hours. Majestic indeed.

The Flags in Colonial Malaya...

In this posting I want to talk about Flags. I was born in 1939 and grew up during the Japanese occupation of Malaya from 1941 to 1945. So the first flag I saw was the Japanese flag, the white flag with the red circle in the centre. With the return of the British authority the Union Jack was again flown everywhere. With the defeat of the Japanese and the return of the British authority in Malaya the school was reopened. Except for the Japanese school all other schools was closed during the Japanese occupation. In January 1946 I start schooling. I remember my father took me to Sekolah Melayu Teruntun at Jalan Gambut in Kuantan. From the shop-house at Wall Street [now Jalan Mahkota] where we live we walk across the Padang, then follow the path across the grassland behind the Kuantan District Office to the school. The school is across the road with a few Pokok Kelapa Bali planted in front near the roadside. Kelapa Bali is what the Oil Palm is now known. It was at the school tha...
