The Copper Pots....

These are the a copper pots that I inherited from my father. He had numbers of it in various sizes for cooking at the restaurant or at Kenduri. At that time, it was difficult to get such pots in Malaya so he got his friends from Kerala to bring a few and this is the smallest in size. When the restaurant was closed my younger brother, who managed the restaurant after the demised of our father took it to his house and kept it in his store. I went to have a look and it was all blacked with soothes after many years of uses for cooking. I told my brother to let me have two of the smallest and he agreed.  I then took it to my house in Kuala Lumpur. Both were used for decoration. When the kids got their own house, I decided to give both to them, sort of passing down of an inheritance that is priceless. Once belong to their grandfather. A part of our family history.

Have a nice day.

Salam Pak Idrus. Apa khabar?

That's a nice copper pot and it's worth preserving.

My mother, who used to do catering for family weddings many years ago, also have a few periuk and other cooking utensils which are now gathering dust in the store. But nothing nice enough for me to put on display, heheh...

Take care, sir..

Oldstock,

Thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts on the subject of this posting. Well, I love the work of art so I decided to keep it in the family. Thus, I now give it to my kids and it's been displayed in their home. Surely in the many of your mom's pots and pan there are some that worth cleaning up and display. Nice Sir is subjective, so do go and have a look and take out, shine it and put it on display. Who knows, it may glow in a new environment.

Have a nice day.

Ikan Singgang....

Ikan Singgang is  one traditional Malay dish that is simple to do. Yet it is not only delicious but nutritious as well. Its one dish that you can find in the Malay world, perhaps call by other names, nevertheless it is still Ikan Singgang. It is the creation of our ancestors where fish have always been their main protein source; sort of the wisdom of the old. A wise creation indeed and because of it we still kept enjoying it  I have always love Ikan Singgang especially when Ikan Aya [Tuna fish] is use but it always taste as good even with other fish like Tenggiri or Kerisi. When making this simple dish one herb/spice that is a must is Lengkuas [Galangal] for without it the Singgang is not complete. The above image of Ikan Singgang is made with Ikan Tenggiri. Delicious as usual. Taken with steamy white rice and Budu [Anchovies sauce] or Sambal Belacan [Shrimp sauce] it is heaven already.  I posted that image on Facebook and below are two informative comments made th...

The Flags in Colonial Malaya...

In this posting I want to talk about Flags. I was born in 1939 and grew up during the Japanese occupation of Malaya from 1941 to 1945. So the first flag I saw was the Japanese flag, the white flag with the red circle in the centre. With the return of the British authority the Union Jack was again flown everywhere. With the defeat of the Japanese and the return of the British authority in Malaya the school was reopened. Except for the Japanese school all other schools was closed during the Japanese occupation. In January 1946 I start schooling. I remember my father took me to Sekolah Melayu Teruntun at Jalan Gambut in Kuantan. From the shop-house at Wall Street [now Jalan Mahkota] where we live we walk across the Padang, then follow the path across the grassland behind the Kuantan District Office to the school. The school is across the road with a few Pokok Kelapa Bali planted in front near the roadside. Kelapa Bali is what the Oil Palm is now known. It was at the school tha...
