Family tree..

This is what our eldest granddaughter wrote on Facebook  and I am sharing  it  here for everyone to read. And perhaps contributes.

Have a nice day.

For the past few weeks, I have been acquainted with relatives whom I have not been in touch or met before, so whenever they have left, I would always ask Atok, "How am I and this person related?". Atok would then explain the intricate family tree that we have, leaving me with question marks in my head all the time. An example to his answer would be " Dia ni, cucu kepada kakak atok, sama mak, lain bapak" or "Dia ni, ayah dia dua pupu dengan tok, belah mak tok". Fuhh confusing much!

So today, Atok asked me to get a piece of paper and a pen, and together we came up with this family tree of ours. Little did I know that Aki(Abu Bakar) named Atok after his own father (Idrus).

Aki came from Kerala on a boat to Malaya when he was just 12 years old, in search of a good life. He went to Singapore, Kelantan and all other places in Malaya and finally settled down in Kuantan and started a "kedai mamak" the one and only shop selling roti canai in Kuantan at that time. He married Asiah, had 6 children, and later married Jiddah and Mariam.

The story goes on and on from there, and I am amazed at how complex and interesting this family tree is. So Jehan Bakar, Hahahamid Saifuddin, Abdul Mutalib Saifuddin, Adilah Aminuddin, Anwar Aminuddin, Azib Aminuddin, Adibah Aminuddin, Rusaslina Idrus have fun finding yourselves in here! And do help me out with those missing names if you can!

The Flags in Colonial Malaya...

In this posting I want to talk about Flags. I was born in 1939 and grew up during the Japanese occupation of Malaya from 1941 to 1945. So the first flag I saw was the Japanese flag, the white flag with the red circle in the centre. With the return of the British authority the Union Jack was again flown everywhere. With the defeat of the Japanese and the return of the British authority in Malaya the school was reopened. Except for the Japanese school all other schools was closed during the Japanese occupation. In January 1946 I start schooling. I remember my father took me to Sekolah Melayu Teruntun at Jalan Gambut in Kuantan. From the shop-house at Wall Street [now Jalan Mahkota] where we live we walk across the Padang, then follow the path across the grassland behind the Kuantan District Office to the school. The school is across the road with a few Pokok Kelapa Bali planted in front near the roadside. Kelapa Bali is what the Oil Palm is now known. It was at the school tha...
