The Mangis [Mangosteen]...

I love tropical fruits and Banana is my favorite. Banana and Papaya could be got at any times throughout the years whereas the Durian, Duku, Mangis  are seasonal. One of the seasonal fruit is the Mangis. While looking around the lush green surrounding of the Tanjung Inn at Cherating the other day I found a Mangis tree with fruits that has yet to ripen. It greenish white in color. Nowadays unless you live in a Kampong with the tree around your house, it not often that one gets to see young Mangis fruits still hanging from the branches, looking fresh. With my camera, I took a few shots of that fruit. It would take a while before that fruits on this tree could be consumed. Unlike the Durian the Mangis does not smell. The Mangis is different in that it is a small round fruit with dark purple skin. The thick inner skin may stained clothing so it is best to be careful when prying to open the fruit. Inside are the succulent white flesh ready to be eaten. One interesting factor of the...

Of Fig Planting in Malaysia...

I have always love to eat cake or biscuits that contain figs and never thought that fig tree could be planted in this country. Of course we have the local fig trees but it just grow wild and most of the time folks in this country never use it for food. But recently when I join a closed group on Facebook that call Malaysia Gardeners I notice that many friends talk and exchange ideas and information on Fig and growing it in their garden. Some kept exchanging variates and give it among friends. On one posting in the group a friend post a box of cutting that he got from a friend from another part of the country and that he has indeed start planting the plants with some success. I post a comment on the posting and jokingly say that I would love to have some cutting. He reply on my personal message that he could send me some if I give him my address. Without much ado I let him have my address and today, this morning I received a small package from the postman.  Delighted with the c...

Belimbing Buluh....

It is not that easy to get this fruits since it is not always sold in the market as the demand is not that great. So when one need to use it in some traditional dishes where the fruits would give a special flavor to the dish one have to look high and low for it. One way is to go to where a tree is planted and ask the owner for the fruits. Most of the time the owner would just say take it but one just could not do that all the times. So some years ago I decided to plant the tree in front of our house, outside the gate. It grows well indeed and would bear plenty of fruits when the weather is hot. Most of the time there are too many fruits and if not taken would fall to the ground. Since this fruit is sour and acidic even the birds or small animals does not eat it so if not taken it would just go to waste. At time I just give it away to the neighbor or would offer to others who want it to take it right from the tree. As for us we use it in the making of Sambal Belacan [Shrimp ...

The Coconut...

In any Malay house's compound in the Kampong there would surely be a Coconut Palm. Coconut is a versatile plant; it fruits produce the coconut milk, the husk of the coconut fruit could be turn in many useful thing like brushes, broom or in some cases as filling for the mattresses. Its old trunk could be made as material for building bridges across narrow rivers, its leaves could be woven into containers for boiling rice for special occasion, it milks use in the cooking of curry and the making of traditional cakes. It also could be turn into eating oil that is better in nutrition than any vegetable oils in the market. Well it uses are indeed endless. The other day while walking on the beach in front of our condo at Pantai Puteri in Malacca I saw two coconuts tied together washed onto the shore. It is normal for coconut to be tied that way so as to make it easy to carry along. About is the image of that coconut that I saw that morning on the beach; a beautiful image indeed. ...
