The Hair Cut...

This morning I had a few things in mind, so after a light breakfast I drive the Honda to get a haircut, not that I had much hair on my head but just a ritual of sort to be just Me. I went in and sat on one of the chair. The usual barber was attending to the only customer next to me. Then a young chap came over coughing. Since he continues coughing I ask him to cover his mouth but he seem not to understand me. The elderly person nearby explain to him in Tamil while the young man kept coughing. That means he did not understand Malay. It looks like he is another foreigner employed as barber. Since He continues coughing I decided not to have the haircut. That virus could put me into months of misery. I left and went next door to have a TT. l sat down but no one came to take my order so I decided to move out and drive to an aquarium at Jalan Ulu Kelang and bought a new pump for my Fish pond and some feeds for the fish. I then remember there is another Barbershop at the Naan corner. I stop there and went in and wait for two kids having their haircut while their parents waits opposite me. We got into talking and soon it was my turn to get the haircut. After that I decided to return home and had an early lunch. Now dah Zohor... Alhamdullilah. [The posting was from FB]

Have a nice day.

Ikan Singgang....

Ikan Singgang is  one traditional Malay dish that is simple to do. Yet it is not only delicious but nutritious as well. Its one dish that you can find in the Malay world, perhaps call by other names, nevertheless it is still Ikan Singgang. It is the creation of our ancestors where fish have always been their main protein source; sort of the wisdom of the old. A wise creation indeed and because of it we still kept enjoying it  I have always love Ikan Singgang especially when Ikan Aya [Tuna fish] is use but it always taste as good even with other fish like Tenggiri or Kerisi. When making this simple dish one herb/spice that is a must is Lengkuas [Galangal] for without it the Singgang is not complete. The above image of Ikan Singgang is made with Ikan Tenggiri. Delicious as usual. Taken with steamy white rice and Budu [Anchovies sauce] or Sambal Belacan [Shrimp sauce] it is heaven already.  I posted that image on Facebook and below are two informative comments made th...

The Flags in Colonial Malaya...

In this posting I want to talk about Flags. I was born in 1939 and grew up during the Japanese occupation of Malaya from 1941 to 1945. So the first flag I saw was the Japanese flag, the white flag with the red circle in the centre. With the return of the British authority the Union Jack was again flown everywhere. With the defeat of the Japanese and the return of the British authority in Malaya the school was reopened. Except for the Japanese school all other schools was closed during the Japanese occupation. In January 1946 I start schooling. I remember my father took me to Sekolah Melayu Teruntun at Jalan Gambut in Kuantan. From the shop-house at Wall Street [now Jalan Mahkota] where we live we walk across the Padang, then follow the path across the grassland behind the Kuantan District Office to the school. The school is across the road with a few Pokok Kelapa Bali planted in front near the roadside. Kelapa Bali is what the Oil Palm is now known. It was at the school tha...
